Episode Three

A Scottish Solution

The news of ether anaesthesia soon arrived in London, prompting doctors in the UK to trial it there. The industrial revolution was putting more pressure on healthcare, and more people than ever were needing surgery. But the more they used ether, the more doctors realised that it had its problems. Soon, the Scottish obstetrician James Young Simpson would discover a new agent, that in his mind was better. But as he began to use it, he’d face opposition from other doctors, and from The Church.
